I have been a Specialist Professional Advisor (SPA) for CQC for twelve years and am Non Executive Director for a small number of care related businesses. I have over forty years experience in health and social care, being both a qualified nurse and qualified social worker. More recently I was the Regional Director for an international Charity, before retiring in February 2021.
So who am I?Personal InfoI'm a very proud father and Grandfather. My wife is also a qualified Nurse and qualified Social Worker and both my daughters are Registered Nurses, so it must be in our DNA! I love spending time on my motorbikes and in our motorhome, travelling the UK and also Europe. I work as an Extra now and again and have appeared in Scott & Bailey, The Accused, Last Tango in Halifax, etc.
Professional InfoI am experienced in the planning, development and delivery of both contracted services within health and social care and also in Emergency Response services. In my previous salaried role, I have been extremely successful in developing new contracts and negotiating existing contracts and service level agreements with Trusts, CCG's and local authorities. I have established A&E discharge services, ensuring that service standards and referral targets are achieved and maintained. I have developed and maintained excellent relationships with commissioners, colleagues, other professionals and external organisations. I have identified local changes, trends and opportunities and progressed these to contract.
With the benefit of experience and qualifications in both health (nursing) and social care (social work), I feel comfortable in both settings therefore, and appreciate the interaction between both professions. My Social Work registration with Social Work England is current.
I established my own domiciliary care agency in the early 90's, successfully building the business from scratch before selling to a large national. I am familiar with contractual arrangements and service specification with commissioners. I have completed PQQ’s and tenders and represented for interviews in bids for block contracts and have been successful on many occasions.
In my own business and as a member of various National and Senior Management Teams, I am of course confident in the allocation and administration of budgets and I have a good understanding of financial issues, journaling, unit cost, on costs, margins, etc. I have written and updated policies and procedures and embedded the same in established working practices, in a variety of healthcare and social care settings.
I am familiar and comfortable with the matrix management structure, in previous employment as Regional Quality Assurance Manager for a group of domiciliary care agencies and also within a large charity through national and area line management, including quality and outcomes. I have completed ‘Strategic Emergency and Crisis Management’ at the Cabinet Office Emergency Planning College and also Root Cause Analysis training, both of which gave an interesting perspective to my current role.
I appreciate the value of co-ordinating services in a monitoring and supportive capacity and I have a good understanding of the role of the CQC and ‘good practice’ expectations and outcomes, including legislative provision, monitoring and analytical data preparation.
